Hello Pretty is Winding Down

After more than ten fulfilling, magical years beginning in the good old days of 2012, Hello Pretty is retiring and heading off to the beach with a drink with a tiny umbrella.

Vintage With Love

I was recently invited to a lovely, intimate breakfast with the ladies behind Vintage With Love - I had heard of the Jo'burg event, and was really interested in finding out what happens behind the scenes.

The concept is that fashionistas get to shop til they drop, and all proceeds go to literacy charities - that Jo'burg event? R750 000 in the bag, to help teach kiddies to read. Impressive or what? Not your aunties average pre-owned clothing sale - these ladies mean business.

Naturally the next step is to expand their reach to include Cape Town, which is where breakfast came in. The most fabulous Pnina Fenster charmed the pants off us, with tales of the fantasies that both vintage and the ability to read can weave in our lives.

"We've never lived in an age where fashion is so changeable and democratised - this age of consumption makes vintage all the more precious." Pnina felt that vintage is surrounded by the magic of chance - to find with a really great vintage piece is a serendipitous event in itself. How did this piece come to find you? Did someone fall in love wearing this?

Once we were well fed and whipped into a nostalgic frenzy by Pnina's anecdotes, we got down to brass tacks - how do we get involved?

The main event is to take place during the first weekend of June 2015, at The Forum Company in Constantia - but first, they need a hand from anyone looking to purge themselves of any gently worn fashion taking up space at the back of their wardrobes. (If only to make space for new things!)

Menswear Trends with Hello Pretty

Some of you may recall the Beeld Lifestyle article on menswear trends that we contributed to a little while ago - since we were sharing some premium intel (because we're totally humble), we decided to elaborate a bit further for you guys.

So menswear trends in 2014! These aren't so much predictions as observations as we go about our daily lives - the boys are getting more and more comfortable with expressing themselves, which is really great to see. And fun!

Prints are making a real splash, and florals aren't just being reserved for women anymore.  What's nice is that if you're not a full male fashionista, the huge number of printed accessories for men are available that allow you to dip your toes into the trends.  For example, printed bow ties, as well as a massive growth in the popularity of printed, quirky socks.

Statement shoes also seem to be making appearances everywhere - the printed trend also comes into play here, but for the more reserved guy even just brightly coloured sneakers are all over the place.  Coming into play here as well is a trend that is becoming huge across all spheres of influence, not just mens fashion - being able to customise your shoes or sunglasses and own once off items in a world surrounded by mass production is very appealing. For example, one of our sellers, Eish Hade allows you to customise your sneakers. (Also reflective of the continued world wide rise of "craft")

Accessories like "man bags" are also very on trend - leather goods, for instance, are a classic and elegant investment that can stay with you for life. (for example, Savior Brand Co and Chartermade) Camo has been seeping back for a while - this does not mean it must be baggy! (oversized also doesn't necessarily equate to baggy) A tailored look is always on trend - South African men seem to be paying closer attention to taking better care of themselves, so stuff is fitting better, beards are trendy and groomed and people are just looking more put together.

Jewellery is becoming more widely accepted, with arm parties not being just for the ladies! "Africas" are popping up with increasing regularity, which are very special and unique, and wooden rings are hugely popular.

What's nice to see is that fashion is becoming a lot more accessible - I think the rise of male fashion bloggers also contribute to high fashion filtering down to the average guy. People are also looking to street style for inspiration more and more, as opposed to just glossy mags. Although we feel they feed off each other as well.

So that's what WE think. How about you? Do you have any suggestions or predictions for menswear trends?

Recently two of Team Hello Pretty set up camp at the sparkly new Bow Peep studio for a day - we were able to peek behind the curtain, and catch a glimpse of where and how the magic happens:

We were greeted by a rainbow world of beautiful patterns and toasted cheese sammiches - it's always so amazing to see the work that goes into the amazing products that we're lucky enough to be exposed to. It's something really special.

And naturally we both walked out with newly purchased goodies!

Ten Wardrobe Staples Every Woman Should Own

10 items every woman should own

Mags do it, newspapers do it, fashionistas do it, so heck, we're doing it too.

We all know that there's a bunch of things that we should all have in our cupboards. "Go to" items in times of crisis, bad weather and fat days. However, whether or not we actually subscribe to all of the lists of things the glossies of the world are telling us are a sign of growing up is another thing entirely. *shoves Hello Kitty PJ's under pillow*

So, in the hopes of becoming the elegant, put together, groomed woman that I believe I should be, I have rustled up some of the goodies we apparently should all possess. And after this I'm going to track down my hair brush and attempt to learn some fancy stuff about wine and taxes. (Adulthood man. It's pretty tough.)

10 wardrobe staples every woman should own

1. Pearls darling. Be your most grown up self with a pearly something that will stay with you for life, and can be passed down to your future offspring. I'm personally not a "string of pearls" kinda gal, so I would go for a pretty ring or pair of earrings. They feel a little fresher and younger to me, but still classic and elegant.

- Vintage earrings by Civetta Spark

2. A classic trench. Most mags and woman who don't mess toothpaste/gravy/coffee on themselves will tell you to go for a camel or tan coloured trench. They're really beautiful, but it's probably safer to go for one of the other classic colours if you're klutzy - navy or black for me thanks!
- Winter Coat by Lo

3. Statement sunnies. Guys. I love you. But those free oversized sunglasses you got for in the December issue of your favourite magazine two years ago is just not a thing. As a GIGANTICALLY blind, light sensitive human, I place a lot of value of stuff that takes care of your peepers. And looks hawt. Naturally.
- "The Hill" sunglasses by Kraft Eyewear

4. A Little Black Dress. Obvs. You've had a fat day, your heart has been broken by some jerk, or you have a hot date - nothing will lift your spirits and self esteem like an LBD. Thousands, nay, surely millions of woman, fashion editors and stylists can't be wrong. We all need THAT dress that you can fling on and feel like an instant glamazon.
- Nirvana Dress by Mareth Colleen

5. A crisp white button down shirt. Dress it up with heels and sparkly thangs, dress it down with jeans and flats, look every inch the lady any which way.
- Audrey Shirt by Georgie.B

10 wardrobe staples every woman should own

6. A dressy jacket or blazer. Nothing makes you look more tailored than a good blazer. Much like the white button down, it can be flung over jeans or over some other super smart ensemble to make you feel like a powerhouse with the world at your feet. Hectic meeting or nervy interview that day? Fling on your blazer and Get Stuff Done.
- Cocktail jacket by Silver Spoon

7. Ballet flats. Look, we all want to be able to mince around in a pair of killer heels like your local Tina Turner impersonating drag queen. (For realsies ladies - How do you do it? Teach me!) However, for some of us, that is just not going to happen. Have a pair a killer heels stashed for special occassions, but if it's not one of your many talents, rather forgo looking like a pained giraffe and call it a day with some sophisticated pumps.
- Classic Ballet Pumps by Bohème Atelier

8. A clutch. Almost all of us are guilty of lugging half our lives and the neighbours dog around in ovesized bags. But how many of you actually own a clutch? I didn't, until a very fab friend bought me a lovely little guy and said, "Clutches are perfect gifts. Every woman needs one but none of them will buy it for themselves." So grab a fancy tiny bag for yourself or a girlfriend - you never know when Ryan Gosling/Reynolds/Kwanten/Phillippe will stumble into your life and need you to hit the red carpet with him RIGHT THIS MINUTE. Be prepared gurl.
- Hand made leather clutch by Thabo Makhetha

9. Grown up jammies. Your ex ex ex boyfriends boxers and a free oversized tshirt that you got from that 5k race your girlfriends dragged you to one time does NOT count as pyjamas anymore. You may not be entirely together quite yet, but you're not a student who smells like box wine and yesterday's laundry anymore either. Get something pretty that you can answer the door in.
- Stone sleepwear set by Anna-Louise Sleepwear

10 wardrobe staples every woman should own

And last but not least;

10. Respectable luggage. One piece of luggage that gets missed so easily is a decent overnight bag. I've had to up and leave unexpectedly to help a girlfriend through a break up, for a family emergency or to crash at someones apartment because we're planning to go full wino that night (drunk driving is not cool y'all. Make the unofficial number eleven on this list a couple of cab company phone numbers programmed into your phone). Feel fabulous when you arrive at your desination with luggage that looks as together as you do. Even if you're a mess, you won't look it!

So Pretties, not so tough right? Go forth and be your phenomenal selves!

Pretty Personal with Elzanne Louw

A woman after Team HP’s heart, Elzanne Louw was drinking wine while we had this interview. She’s just wrapped up her Spring/Summer collection (look how pretty!) and took some time to spill the beans on how she came to create Lo, one of our favourite brands, which has been with us since the very beginning!

  1. Hel”Lo” Zani! Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a compulsive maker of things, always have been, and used to drive my mother nuts as a child with impulsive projects which often involved a big mess. But I get a lot of satisfaction from my work because fashion is ever evolving and all about self expression. I guess it was a match made in heaven.
  2. You must have had some of the best dressed Barbies in town! So, you knew you wanted to do this ever since you were a kid?
I always knew that I wanted to build something really big, and in 2011 I realised that something big was my own small business. I have deep roots in the so-called creative industry and have always yearned for a career which would satisfy both my artistic needs and my suppressed inner geek. Lo was the inevitable result and I hope to grow this little fashion business into a viable contributor to the South African economy.
  3. That’s a philosophy we really love. And you? What sort of things do you “Lo”ve?
I LOve my inner geek because she has taught me a lot myself and what I am capable of.
I LOve when people use their brains to help other people.
And I really really really LOve Hello Pretty :)
  4. Aw, shucks, you’re gonna make us blush! Speaking of Hello Pretty, tell us about the “Lo”vely things we can find in your store?
I always say to people that I want to make that one item of clothing that has been in your cupboard for years. That go-to item, that just seems to be perfect for every occasion. You know, the one that you have worn to death…The one with the holes and stains which was demoted to home-wear two years ago but you still LOve it too much to let it go (and let’s face it you still wear it out every now and then). I hope to make clothes with longevity and clothes that women LOve to wear.
  5. Ah, going out in jammies - one of our guilty pleasures. What’s yours?
Gettin my NAILZ DID with my friend Wendz! DUH :) The more glitter the better. Hehehe.

We also love gettin’ our nails did! (Even Scott, although he won’t admit it.) For her stunning S/S line and even more pretty things, check out Lo’s Hello Pretty store, and get in touch on Facebook and Twitter.

Silver Spoon Clothing on SALE

Pretties, we have an amazing job.  We get to deal with some of the most talented people that this country has to offer. In the wake of Heritage Day, I have to say that we are just so darn proud of them, and of South African design in general.  It’s an exciting position to be in.

One brand that needs attention paid to it, is undoubtedly Silver Spoon.  This husband and wife team have been in the game for a while and have been invaluable mentors to us.

The interwebs would have you know that Stephanie has been awarded Best Technical Design Award for her range “Little Obsessions and Childhood Recollections”. First Prize for a Couture outfit was also handed to her and she received a R10 000 bursary. Dieter was chosen as one of South Africa’s Best Young Male Designers by Mohair South Africa; an outfit he designed for them was shown on ramp at SA’s fashion week in Johannesburg in 2005.  Can you spell Dream Team?

Not only are they brilliant and massively qualified - they are extremely generous with their time, knowledge and experience, and even equipment  - they actively champion young industry people and help where ever they can.

It was with great pride that I spent Braai Day in one of their dresses - it was just the prettiest, flowiest dress, and I felt great in it - Stephanie knows how to make a lady feel good about herself!

They are having a phenomenal sale on their Hello Pretty store page.  After proudly representing them and others at the SAFW Pop Up Shop  we can vouch for the quality of the clothing - ladies, the PU pencil skirt.  It’s like a Wonderbra for your behind - I’ve never quite seen anything like it!

Go on.  You totally deserve it.

Some SA Fashion Week popup photos

One of Team HP’s favourite things about doing what we do is that it puts us in touch with so many amazing creative people from around the country. And after the SAFW Pop Up Shop, we can confirm that Pretoria is no exception. We were lucky enough to be able to invite some guests to the launch party, and our friends from the I Love Pretoria blog came out to enjoy the evening with us. The lovely Nadine from ILP took some stunning shots of the crowd and the fashion on display. There was bubbly, stylish people, and an all-around great vibe. Not bad, Pretoria. Not bad at all.

If you want the skinny on what’s happening in PTA, I Love Pretoria has got it. The two lovely lasses who run it are both designers and photographers, so they have a keen eye for pretty things - no wonder we like them! You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook.
