Hello Pretty is Winding Down

After more than ten fulfilling, magical years beginning in the good old days of 2012, Hello Pretty is retiring and heading off to the beach with a drink with a tiny umbrella.

Celebrating Coffee

Roasting beans, strong aromas and your favourite mug, what comes to mind?

Coffee is one of those things in life that we can’t live without! There’s nothing better than waking up in the morning to a good cup of coffee, or when you hit that afternoon dip, for a quick pick-me-up. To be honest, walking into a house or a coffee shop and smelling brewing coffee has to be one of the best experiences in life!

Today we celebrate coffee by looking at some vintage coffee ads; some of them are hilarious and I can’t believe how ridiculously cheap it was compared to today. It’s actually great to see how it has evolved; from instant coffee being the in-thing to the amazing Nespresso machine! I can’t wait to see what comes next.

One thing is clear though, through the ages we have all loved coffee and definitely will for years to come!

Ryo Coffee sells amazing raw coffee beans, plungers and coffee grinders right here on Hello Pretty, have a look!

We suspect we're not alone in our love of things from days gone by. Vintage just keeps on gaining momentum, and number one on our lust list at the moment is this genuine analogue Pentax SP500 film camera. Chicbones Vintage only has one of these beauties in stock, so hurry to snap it up here.

We featured this item in our newsletter this week, along with a curated collection of our favourite vintage and vintage-inspired items from the site. There's a new theme every week, so if you'd like to be kept in the loop, sign up below!

I was recently invited to a lovely, intimate breakfast with the ladies behind Vintage With Love - I had heard of the Jo'burg event, and was really interested in finding out what happens behind the scenes.

The concept is that fashionistas get to shop til they drop, and all proceeds go to literacy charities - that Jo'burg event? R750 000 in the bag, to help teach kiddies to read. Impressive or what? Not your aunties average pre-owned clothing sale - these ladies mean business.

Naturally the next step is to expand their reach to include Cape Town, which is where breakfast came in. The most fabulous Pnina Fenster charmed the pants off us, with tales of the fantasies that both vintage and the ability to read can weave in our lives.

"We've never lived in an age where fashion is so changeable and democratised - this age of consumption makes vintage all the more precious." Pnina felt that vintage is surrounded by the magic of chance - to find with a really great vintage piece is a serendipitous event in itself. How did this piece come to find you? Did someone fall in love wearing this?

Once we were well fed and whipped into a nostalgic frenzy by Pnina's anecdotes, we got down to brass tacks - how do we get involved?

The main event is to take place during the first weekend of June 2015, at The Forum Company in Constantia - but first, they need a hand from anyone looking to purge themselves of any gently worn fashion taking up space at the back of their wardrobes. (If only to make space for new things!)

An Ode to Old Japan

One of the Hello Pretty team, Justin, left Cape Town yesterday for a blissful 2 week break in Japan. So instead of writing about how bitterly jealous I am, sitting here in these foggy overcast conditions, I’m posting some vintage Japan snaps from the Flickr Commons.

  1. Woman with mirrors, taken in 1890.
  2. Home Learning to play a harp-like instrument.
  3. Playing the samisen which is a 3-stringed guitar.
  4. A doctor and his patient. Taken between 1867 and 1869. Is that a sword poking out from under his cape? Not sure I would like being treated under those conditions.

This one’s a little more modern (from 1966), but I loved it and had to include it. Japanese Origami, photographed in 1966.
