After more than ten fulfilling, magical years beginning in the good old days of 2012, Hello Pretty is retiring and heading off to the beach with a drink with a tiny umbrella.

Fancying it up with Nespresso

Towards the end of last year, we and Stacy from A Ring to It were treated to a VIP Nespresso event hosted by Hirch's Homestore in Milnerton.

Scott, the man behind this video, takes ourselves and our job very seriously as you can see.

We got to meet several members of the Cape Town blogging community and media, to sample our selection from Nescafé's broad selection of Nespresso coffee pods, and best of all: be schooled about espresso. As it turns out, your pods are great for a lot more than a pick-me-up or cappuccino. Pay attention:

Cocktails. And. Coffees.

There are espresso cocktails for days! The bar-tists (see what I did there?) gave us a demonstrations of how to make a few of Nespresso's espresso-based cocktails & mocktails (including which pod is for what).

Try out some of the recipes on the Nespresso website and let us know what your favourites are. Stacy, Scott and I voted a tie between The Melktert, and the Peppermint Crisp.

And of course, this post could never be complete without me showing you some locally-made companions to enjoy with your drinks.

1) Obviously you can only store your Nespresso pods in this magnificent pod dispenser by Native Decor.
2 & 4) Come on man, don't be a savage. Use a coaster. Click here for the King Protea coasters by Hallo Jane, and the hashtag coasters are called the Bamboo Warp coasters by Bambou.
3) Matt white ceramic cup and timber saucer by Cabo Design.
5) Sandy Godwin's earthenware dinner plates.
6) A lace-print cheese platter by Ck-Ramics.
7) A small matt white milk jug with a dandelion, by Cabo Design.
8) A set of two yellow square pattern napkins from Handmade By Me.

The drinks pictured above, with a link to their recipes, are:
    Tiramisu Coffee
    Yellow Indriya Coffee
    Cafè Banana Split
    After Eight Coffee
    Gingerbread Coffee
    Freshpresso Orange
    Cafè Banana Split
    Nespresso Martini Coffee
    Vanilla Iced Coffee Storm
    L'Amandine Café
    Semi-Freddo Pistachio Coffee
    Mojito Café

It was a treat of a day. Thanks millions to Hirch's, Nespresso and Grey for including us in your fantastic event. It was so well organised, and such an enjoyable way to indulge in a sneaky bit of time out of the office.

The Last Resort

Are you guys still spinning as much from the Christmas shopping carnage as we are? Besides the obvious need to get gifts for our loved ones (and the office Secret Santa), let's all be honest with ourselves here: we all like to sneak in a little "Treat Yo'. Self" gift here and there. Because we deserve it.

We love attending pop-ups and markets, and discovering new designers and hanging out with the ones we know. Last year, Joanna Hedley, the designer & entrepreneur behind a luxury swimwear brand called BeachCult put on a designer showcase & pop-up before the Christmas season and we found loads of talent we hadn't known about.

There was art, fashion, swimwear, jewellery, accessories... a little bit of everything. It was a gorgeous curation of designers and a product range that would almost certainly make your heart skip. I really should have taken that gorgeous Kerbholz watch home with me.

Go on and check out this talent. The designers represented were: BeachCult, Granadilla, Taibo Bacar, Michael Maven, Twins for Peace, Lisp, Ross & Brown, Ayagoods, Summah, Soul Design Jewellery, Yellow Jewellery, Khukutsi, Bagmee, Iloni Jewellery, SMITH Jewellery, Gabriela Fraser, Le Short, Diva Jeans, 35 Degrees, Kerbholz Watches, Wholistic Bodycare, and MASH Boutique.

Here's some pop-up eye candy for you:

The event was hosted at 91 Loop Hotel and The Honey Badger Restaurant (which is a really cute little spot - if you're in Cape Town, pop in).

Join the Hello Pretty team for a few days

We're hiring! OMG WOW!

We're looking for two or three students (or anyone, really) looking to make a bit of extra holiday money. Starting asap. Roll in, girls & guys!

The job's short-term, probably a total of a few days and pays by the hour (so if you want to work longer days that's 100%. There is a horrifyingly large amount of work to be done). We'll need you for a minimum of 7 hours on each day that you work. We need two or three people.

It is very important that you:

  • Are clued up in fashion, design etc trends.
  • Are friendly. You have to be friendly. We are, and we work best with people who also are.
  • Are good at following instructions.
  • Are able to come through into De Waterkant / Green Point.
  • Are reliable. We cannot even with people who show up late or fail to show up at all.
  • Are computer literate and own (or can borrow) a laptop.
  • Are observant.
  • Are over 15. Please don't make us get a fine.

Is this you? Here's what to do:

  • Email samantha@hellopretty.co.za
  • Make the subject, "Casual employment application: and enter your name and surname here". This is important, and will give us a good sense of whether or not you follow instructions.
  • Send us links to your Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr... basically any online profiles that you have. We want to check out your style.

Don't send me a CV. I'm not interested in your CV - just what you have to say and what you're about.

Looking forward to hearing from you, future co-workers.

Celebrate Constantia? Yes, definitely!

We've always loved the Constantia region. The scenery is magnificent, with beautiful streets lined with age-old trees, stately homes and vineyards. It also happens to be home to one of our favourite wineries - Groot Constantia (we were not bribed or paid to say this. Taste their 2013 chardonnay and you'll see). No guest of mine is ever allowed to leave Cape Town without having visited the Groot Constantia estate.

A very short distance before you turn off into Groot Constantia is a beautiful little centre called Constantia Village. It hosts lovely little boutiques and restaurants - well worth a visit.

Last week, we attended an event to Celebrate Constantia at the centre, and it really did feel like a celebration. There was live music, tastings from local wineries, chefs, breweries and a variety of proudly South African goodness.

We were also able to sit down and learn to make flower crowns, and macrame plant hangers which we were able to take home with a plant in. An escape to a tiny paradise away from the routines of the work week.

I have to commend the organisers. This was one of the most relaxing, well-run and enjoyable events that I've attended. Ethereal Bound Journal / Butterknife teams you can be really proud of yourselves, it was awesome. I'm so happy that we were able to attend.

A shout-out to the fantastic sponsors, collaborators and participants:

Smith & Boyd's Zero Degrees - The Hottest New Trend!

All Smith & Boyd’s pictures are undoubtedly captivating. They somehow elicit a strong emotional connection, like you’ve been there yourself, either peering through the lens, or as the subject itself. Their Zero Degrees project is no different. Flowers and other organic matter are frozen into blocks and dropped into various water sources, allowing the ice to crack and burst, releasing the encapsulated artwork as it slowly melts away. Not only are these pictures different and thought provoking, but they are downright beautiful to boot.

We had a chat with Bruce Boyd to find out a bit more.

HP: How long have you been working on this project?
BB: We have been working on the project for more than a year now. Our first image was shot in May last year when I accidentally dropped an ice-block with frozen flowers into a swimming pool.

HP: What inspires the different creations you and Tharien Smith make?
BB: Tharien is inspired by water and nature. She likes what flowers represent: passion, love, gratitude, innocence, etc. I grew up with massive flower arrangements in our house at all times. My mother used to put them together and my father used to paint them. All our walls were adorned with my father’s creations. I guess I am walking in my father’s footsteps using my own tools for creation.

HP: Which are your of your favourite pieces, and why?
BB: Tharien's favourite is the bones. She is fascinated by archeology. My favourite piece is not part of the prints collection(yet). It features decaying cosmos flowers half submerged in an oily puddle. I love the decay and the elements of pollution combined with the last shreds of beauty from the wilting flowers.

HP: You drop your creations into different kinds of water sources. What are the different reactions and affects this creates?
BB: The ice reacts to the temperature of the water and then either cracks in interesting ways or sometimes just melts slowly. We have used a wide range of puddles and pools depending on where we are at the time and what is closest. My favourite is a little stream in Betty's Bay that we used extensively during the summer. The water was shallow enough so that you could see the stream bed and it became part of the picture. I also like swimming pools for the intense blueness that sometimes contrast beautifully with the flowers.

HP: What is your greatest aspiration with regard to your artworks?
BB: My artworks are usually just stepping stones for something else that could momentarily satisfy my need to create something interesting. I aspire to have a life filled with projects that make me want to get up early in the morning or stay up late at night. It would be great if they could become self-sustainable so that I would not have to do the mundane things that pay the bills anymore.

HP: Is there anything that you wouldn't encapsulate in ice and photograph? Why not?
BB: Nothing comes to mind. We love playing and experimenting with different objects and textures.

These remarkable images evoke a sense of longevity, while simultaneously reminding us of the fragility of life. Pretty neat stuff. Even better – they’re currently on sale! Go have a gander, and a bout of existentialism here: https://hellopretty.co.za/smithboyd
